RSA 365 Book – Contributor
RSA 365, by Shaun Gaylard with Brett McDougal, documents 365 examples of South Africa architecture through drawings and writing. Yasmin Mayat and Brendan Hart are contributing guest authors with articles on Johannesburg’s historic Kerk Street Mosque and Springs Art Deco architecture.

Section Authors – The Encyclopaedia of Vernacular Architecture
The Encyclopaedia of Vernacular Architecture is a six-volume edition that documents the world’s vernacular architecture and traditional building cultures. Brendan Hart and Yasmin Mayat contributed sections on South African vernacular architecture including Hillbrow Modernism and Springs Art Deco architecture.

In Whose Place Conference – Paper author and speaker
“In Whose Place? Confronting Vestiges of the Colonial Landscape” was an online conference hosted by the Wits History Workshop and School of Architecture and Planning with the support of the European Union National Institutes for Culture. Brendan Hart presented a paper on the Conversion of the Mayfair West Dutch Reformed Church into the Masjid-ul-Islam.

The 16th International Docomomo Conference in Tokoyo, Japan, with the theme of “Inheritable Resilience: Sharing the Values of Global Modernities.” Brendan Hart presented a paper titled “Alternative African Modernisms: Expressive Highveld Vernaculars” looking at the mid-century vernacular modernist architecture of Johannesburg.

The Docomomo Journal is a biannual, open access, international, peer reviewed Journal of Docomomo international. Yasmin Mayat and Brendan Hart co-authored, with Prof Hannah Le Roux of the Wits School of Architecture and Planning, a paper exploring for the potentials of urban renewal and regeneration through the conservation of modernist architecture in the city.
