Marshall Street Barracks Heritage Impact Assessment

The former Marshall Street Police Barracks, dating from 1908, are a significant historic public building located in the Johannesburg city centre. The building fell into decline and decay over the past 20 years before the current proposal to include it as part of a new office development for the Department of Public Works.  The Heritage Impact Assessment uncovered the complex history of the site and its evolution from an early mining town hotel to the temporary home of the Johannesburg High Court before being adapted into the police barracks before outlining the process for the restoration and conservation of the building.
