MERTON KEEP
Merton Keep is a historic building in Pretoria. It was built in 1895 as the home of prominent businessman (and founder of Five Roses Tea) TW Beckett. Part of a large estate, the house was used as a field hospital during the Anglo Boer South African War and has, since 1950, been part of the French Embassy in South Africa.
Ongoing restoration work at the building has included restoration of all door and windows, reconstruction of the lost Victorian verandas and the original entrance tower. Reconstructed from original photographs and documentation the tower features a multivolume interior with a contemporary screen lantern installation referencing the buildings rose garden and its connection, through TW Beckett, to Five Roses Tea.
