The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is an international project to build the world’s largest radio telescope. Based in the remote Karoo, the SKA occupies a number of former farms.  This project had a number of phases.  Initially all of the existing farm buildings were assessed for their heritage value.  From this two historically significant farms, Groot Paardekloof and De Hoek, were identified for preservation and adaptive reuse.  At De Hoek, the original corbelled farmstead, is proposed to be restored and preserved as an important example of this very special type of vernacular architecture.  At Groot Paardekloof, the farmstead is proposed for adaptive reuse to become a lodge and conference facility for use by the SKA.  Estimated for completion in 2027.
